Last night was the 70th Golden Globes, and the stars were out in style on the red carpet. My favorite part of any award show is looking at the celebs and figuring out who was really working the cameras and who needed to rethink their look.
Listed below are some of the winners and losers of last night’s red carpet.
Hit: Zooey Deschanel
This “New Girl” star got a lot of attention for her gorgeous, bright-red Oscar de la Renta ball gown; it flattered her in all the right places. What really made Deschanel stand out, though, was her accessories that still added a touch of personality. The pearl necklace and retro ponytail reminded everyone of her quirky, vintage style. Staying true to yourself is always in fashion. (Plus, if you want to get Zooey’s iconic cat eye, check out this awesome tutorial!)
Don’t get me wrong: I’m a huge fan of the Writer/Director/Star of HBO’s “Girls,” but this dress just isn’t doing anything for Dunham. First, it doesn’t flatter her body type at all. Dunham isn’t overweight, but this gown gives her more curves than she really has. Plus, there’s so much fabric to the dress that she almost gets lost in it. If she’d accessorized with a big necklace or dangly earnings, it would have fixed the problem. As it is, this dress drowns her.
Hit: Lucy Liu
I think some people might disagree me with this one, by I found this movie star’s gown to be unique and gorgeous, two factors that made this a major hit. The floral-printed gown by Carolina Herrera could have looked too much like an old sofa, but it’s just understated enough to remain tasteful. Plus, the dress gives Liu an amazing hourglass shape. Add in a complex, braided hairdo and simple jewelry and there’s no denying that this is one look that worked.
If you’re going to go the shirt and skirt route on the red carpet, at least try and find a shirt that doesn’t gape so much. That’s only part of the problem for “The Girl” star! Besides an unflattering cut, the print is just too busy. Instead of focusing on the beauty and accomplishments of Miller, I was too busy trying to figure out why the pink flowers seemed to be jumping off the outfit! Next time I’d recommend avoiding the high neckline and the boxy top. It was nice that she tried to take a risk, but unlike other stars, it didn’t pay off.
